How to Play Catan: The Ultimate Beginner's Guide to Rules and Setup

Catan is the undisputed gateway to modern board gaming, blending economic strategy with constant player interaction. If you have just opened the box and feel overwhelmed by the hexagonal tiles and wooden pieces, do not worry. This guide explains exactly how the game operates, from setting up your first island to scoring the final victory point.
Your objective is straightforward: be the first player to reach exactly 10 Victory Points (VPs) on your turn. You earn these points by expanding your civilization across the board, building settlements, upgrading them to cities, and acquiring special cards.
Setting Up the Island
Before you can trade sheep for wood, you must construct the island of Catan. The board consists of hexagonal terrain tiles, surrounded by water borders featuring harbors.
Assemble the Frame: Connect the blue water border pieces.
Place the Terrain: Shuffle the hexagonal land tiles and place them randomly inside the frame.
Distribute Number Tokens: This is a critical step. Place the circular number tokens on top of the terrain tiles in alphabetical order (using the letters printed on the back of the tokens), spiraling inwards from the outer edge to the center. This specific pattern ensures a balanced game by preventing the most frequently rolled numbers from grouping together.
Place the Robber: Put the grey Robber pawn on the Desert hex (which receives no number token).
The Draft: Your First Placements
Players begin the game with two settlements and two roads already on the board. The placement order uses a "snake draft" system. The first player places one settlement and one adjacent road, followed sequentially by the rest of the players. Once the last player places their first settlement, they immediately place their second settlement and road, and the order reverses back to the first player.
Pro tip: You collect your starting resources based only on your second settlement placement. You receive one resource card for every terrain hex adjacent to your second settlement.
The Structure of a Turn
To keep the game flowing smoothly, every player's turn is divided into three strict sequential phases.
1. Resource Production (The Roll)
You must begin your turn by rolling the two six-sided dice. The total number rolled dictates which terrain hexes produce resources. Every player (not just the active player) who has a settlement touching a hex with that number collects one corresponding resource card. If they have a city, they collect two cards.
Exception: If a 7 is rolled, no resources are produced. Instead, the Robber activates. Any player holding more than 7 resource cards must discard half of them. The active player then moves the Robber to a new hex, stealing one random resource card from an opponent adjacent to that hex.
2. The Trade Phase
Catan is fundamentally a game of negotiation. During this phase, you can trade your resources to get what you need to build.
Domestic Trade: You may negotiate trades with any other player. However, players can only trade with the active player—they cannot trade with each other.
Maritime Trade: If no one will trade with you, you can trade with the bank at a strict 4:1 ratio (four of the same resource for any one resource). If you have built a settlement on a coastal harbor, this ratio improves to 3:1, or even 2:1 for specific resources.
3. The Building Phase
Using the resources you have accumulated, you may purchase items from your limited supply to expand your network.
Item | Cost | Value / Effect |
Road | 1 Brick, 1 Lumber | Connects settlements. Essential for expansion. |
Settlement | 1 Brick, 1 Lumber, 1 Grain, 1 Wool | Worth 1 VP. Generates 1 resource when rolled. |
City | 2 Grain, 3 Ore | Worth 2 VPs. Replaces a settlement. Generates 2 resources. |
Dev Card | 1 Grain, 1 Wool, 1 Ore | Drawn blindly. Grants special abilities or hidden points. |

Special Victory Conditions
While building infrastructure provides steady points, two special awards can drastically swing the momentum of the game. Both of these awards are worth 2 VPs and can be stolen by other players.
The Longest Road: Awarded to the first player to build a continuous, unbroken path of at least 5 roads. If another player builds a longer path, they immediately take the card and the 2 points. Note: Opponents can break your road by building a settlement on an intersection along your path.
The Largest Army: Awarded to the first player to play 3 Knight cards (found within the Development Card deck). It is stolen if someone plays more Knight cards than the current holder.
Keep tracking your points carefully as you build. The moment your visible points (settlements, cities, special awards) plus any hidden Victory Point development cards in your hand equal 10, declare your victory immediately!
